Transcapillary pulmonary exchange of water in the dog.

چکیده
T HE CAPILLARIES in the lungs, in contrast to capillaries elsewhere in the body, are in effect bathed in air rather than water. There is little histological evidence for a substantial pulmonary interstitial space; instead, the bulk of the lung tissue appears to consist of cells and blood vessels. Perhaps because of these anatomical peculiarities little or no consideration appears to have been given to the possibility that large amounts of water might exchange across the walls of these capillaries. The data presented below, which are part of a more general study of capillary permeability, suggest that, in the normal dog, water does cross these capillaries in amounts per unit time which approach in magnitude the pulmonary blood flow.

Measurement of water distribution and transcapillary solute flux in dog lung by external radioactivity counting.
1. A method for measuring the pulmonary water compartments in vivo in anaesthetized dogs is described. 2. The technique depends upon the sequential intravenous injection of markers labelled with gamma-ray-emitting isotopes. Each is allowed to become evenly distributed throughout the compartment to which it is confined. A calibrated gamma-counter placed at the surface of the inflated lung then r...
متن کاملPulmonary Bulla in a Dog Secondary to Blastomycosis
Case description- A two-year-old intact Golden Retriever was affected with the 6-months previous history of blastomycosis and treatment was performed using fluconazole. Clinical findings- Cough, fever, nasal discharge, dry and harsh lung sounds with peripheral lymphadenopathy was observed. Emphysematous change and large pulmonary bulla was reported in computed tomography of the thorax. Treatm...
متن کاملMyocardial transcapillary exchange in the hypertrophied heart of the dog.
Myocardial transcapillary exchange was investigated in control hearts and in two types of hypertrophied hearts: exercise hypertrophy and pathological hypertrophy due to tricuspid insufficiency. Using the single-injection indicator diffusion method (6, 28), myocardial extractions (E), capillary clearances (C), and permeability surface area products (PS) of urea, sucrose, and inulin were measured...
متن کاملPulmonary transcapillary exchange of Na24 and P32-labeled phosphate in pulmonary emphysema.
In previous studies it was observed that 5 to 20 per cent of intravenously administered Na24 and P32-labeled phosphate and other electrolytes escaped from the circulation during a single transit through the cardiopulmonary pool (1). The relatively small transcapillary exchange of electrolytes in the lungs as compared with skeletal muscle and certain other viscera was attributed to a lesser perm...
متن کاملReflection coefficients of dog lung endothelium to small hydrophilic solutes.
Step additions of small hydrophilic solutes to the perfusate of isolated dog lungs produce weight changes (Vargas-Johnson). The product: (observed reflection coefficient) times (observed filtration coefficient) for the lung endothelial barrier is obtained from the initial weight slope per unit osmolality change. The observed filtration coefficient determined from the sustained constant weight s...
